“Mom and Pop” Stores Vs. “Big-Box” Retailers: a Historical Perspective

Marc Levinson, Greg Minuskin, Jay Glunt

It’s a familiar scenario for any consumer of general products and services nowadays.  Do you shop at the “Mom and Pop” small business that will charge a higher price, but leave you with the feeling that you are truly supporting a well-meaning business endeavor, or do you save a few bucks and head down the street to the “big box” retailer who could seemingly care less if you shop there or not, because they’ll be around for a long time either way?  According to author Marc Levinson, this debate is nothing new, and he talks with “The International Capitalist” David Iwinski about his new book, “The Great A & P and the Struggle For Small Business in America”, and how consumers in the first half of the 20th century found themselves with a similar dilemma as people do today.  Plus, Dave talks with Greg Minuskin, a craftsman who has carved himself a unique niche in the marketplace via fountain pen repair.  And as part of “Consultant’s Corner” on American Entrepreneur Radio, host Buddy Hobart of Solutions 21 welcomes attorney Jay Glunt onto the program to discuss some of the legal issues that an entrepreneur must consider when dealing with the employees in your company.
