Ten Years Later: How Jack Tumpson’s Niche Magazine Has Become More Popular Than Ever
When Jack and Christine Tumpson moved back to the Pittsburgh area in 2000, with the idea of starting a niche magazine devoted to the social and special events niche, it was quite a risk at the time. Between the two of them, they had no publishing experience, and one of their primary competitors was the fully-established “Seen” column in a local newspaper. But Jack’s entrepreneurial spirit and determination kept his idea alive, and this month, WHIRL Magazine turns ten years old, with a monthly readership in excess of 100,000. Jack joins The American Entrepreneur, Ron Morris, to discuss his story, the challenges he has overcome along the way, and why he was able to persevere in an industry when many of his competitors folded up shop.
